The Castle is located on the hill of San Miguel, a high from where can be seen the city and the plain of the river Arlanzón, 75 meters above the city . Besides it is found in the same place where it had two defensive towers that were the first buildings in the city.

The Castle of Burgos had different functions throughout its history as a quarterdeck and royal residence, prison or hosting site for notable guests.
Throughout the times the Castle of Burgos suffered numerous reforms, the first major reform that took place was in the twelfth century, the reform of the fifteenth century was transformed into a palace, later Napoleon’s troops in 1813 destroyed and finally last renovated was in 2003, becaming interpretation center of the castle and in museum.
The Castle of Burgos and the city have had a trajectory of clashes throughout its history as the confrontation that arose during the war of succession to the Castilian crown in 1474.
The Castle of Burgos was sided with Juana la Beltraneja and the city had chosen Isabel la Católica. Finally, the castle was taken by King Fernando el Católico in 1476, after suffering the fiercest attacks of its history.
As the time passes the Castle of Burgos is losing its defensive function and is used for other purposes like gunpowder factory or artillery school,being the first school of artillery Spain.
The latest reform suffered by the Castillo de Burgos has facilitated it opened in 2003 as a center of interpretation of the castle and museum where you can visit the Pozo, a great work of medieval engineering with galleries of thousand feet in length and a hollow cylinder Vertical 61.50 meters deep.
We can also see the Cueva del Moro consisting of a narrow corridor carved into rock that joins El Pozo with a cave located in the walled enclosures of Castillo de Burgos, this gallery would have the function of protecting El Pozo and prevent access to the enemy, reinforcing this function with traps, as it was one of the main objectives during sieges.
