The National Sculpture Museum was founded in 1842 as a result of the confiscation of Mendizabal, in the “Palacio de Santa Cruz” where it remained until 1933 when it was transferred to the “Colegio de San Gregorio” giving it the category of National Sculpture Museum.
Later is acquired the “Palacio de Villena” located opposite the Museum to host the works of the museum while its headquarters is rehabilitated, the “Colegio de San Gregorio”. In 2009 it reopened with the permanent exhibition and holding the “Palacio de Villena” for temporary exhibitions
The National Sculpture Museum is one of the oldest museums in Spain
In 2011 the Ministry of Culture approaches with the restoration of the “Casa del Sol” (acquired in 1999) and also called “Palace of the Conde de Gondomar”. A sixteenth century palace that is separate from the College of San Gregorio by a garden, where funds from the National Museum of Artistic Reproductions are exposed (copies made in the nineteenth and twentieth of the major works of the best European museums) .
The collection that is displayed in the museum spans from the late Middle Ages in the thirteenth century to the twentieth century, where we also have two artistic ensembles The Historic Collection and the collection of sculptural copies.
The Historical Collection that is located in the “Colegio de San Gregorio” and gave rise to the National Sculpture Museum is made up of:
- First of all by clearly medieval works ranging from the thirteenth century to the fifteenth century where the majority are anonymous, although visitors can enjoy works by Van der Weyden and John of Mechelen.
- In the space from the fifteenth century to the eighteenth century visitors can see religious works of authors like Alonso Berruguete, Pompeo Leoni and Juan de Juni. The works that can be seen in this section are altarpieces, tombs, stalls, reliefs, isolated figures and Napolitano Bethlehem with more than six hundred figures
The Collection of the Copies Sculptural from the National Museum of Artistic Reproductions located at the “Casa del Sol” consists of:
- Sculptural reproductions of different civilizations and eras. Furthermore, this collection has been recognized as one of the best in Europe for its quality, quantity and age,
- Also in the National Sculpture Museum are exposed not only sculptures, visitors can also enjoy paintings by great artists such as Zurbarán, Rubens, Pedro Berruguete, Jorge English, Antonio Moro and Pedro Machuca among many other great painters.
