In the Garganta de los Infiernos should be noted the extense hydrographic network. The principal characteristics of this hydrographic network are called “giant marmites”, these giant marmites are large and deep circular pits excavated by of water erosion of the river. One of the most famous, is located in the area of Los Pilones. Also we found in the natural reserve great abundance of water falls, cascades, streams and natural pools.
Another peculiarity of this nature reserve is to have a climate that offers remarkable contrast depending on the altitude, fluctuating between 600 to 2,000 meters. For this reason we find a variety of forests, depending on the altitude at which they are.
- We found the Forests of Ribera along with the courses of rivers, as this species requires great abundance of moisture.Among the trees that are we found are the Willow, Fresno and Alisio. There are also trees that are protected like the Holly, Yew and Birch.
- We found Deciduous Forests like Robles, Thorns, and Rusco Madroños.
In the sunny slopes we found the Cerezo, the cultivation as a basis of the economy of the area.
- As the altitude is increasing we found great abundance of Alpine Grasslands where there are Alphe, Gentians, Heather and Saffron.
- We found the Piornales Serranos , where trees do not grow. In this natural reserve appear scrub adapted to adverse conditions. Between scrub are found the Piorno and Juniper.
The Garganta de los Infiernos has a great faunal abundance given the wide diversity of micro climates that possesses, as these climates change with altitude.
Among the more notable mammals are the montes cats , the genet, the otters, the mountain goat and desman. birds are well represented as we found, red kites, griffon vultures, royals owls, royals eagles, toed eagle, peregrine falcons, hawks, azores, aquatic blackbirds, black stork, jay, hoopoes and rabilargos. The highlight of the fish is the common trout . Among the amphibians there are tritons, salamanders, toads, frogs, lizards and snakes. The most characteristic invertebrates in the area include the butterflies and flying deer.
