The Island Palace is a medieval building of the sixteenth century, was built by a part of the family Mayoralgo Blazquez that just had installed in Cáceres. This family was not recognized by another branch of the same family living in the city since the time of the conquest, so they had to build the palace outside the city walls.
The Island Palace is located next to the Ermita de la Cruz, in the same lot where was the Synagogue of the New Jewish Quarter of Cáceres. The palace has a Renaissance style, although combined with different past trends, such as the Gothic details found in the inner courtyard or padded ashlars of the main portal of Portuguese influence.

The name of Island Palace is due to that in the eighteenth century, its owners were the Marquesses of the Island. With the passage of time, the building was transferred to the City Council, being transformed into Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art. The artists who exhibit their works on a temporary basis or who perform various cultural events, must have some relation to Extremadura.
The building since 2004 hosts the Municipal Library of the Island Palace, which is equipped with the most modern methods of information and consultation. Open to all who wish to consult its bibliographic funds, which are constantly expanding.
The Island Palace is a superb example of restored historic building that has joined that set of places aimed at boosting the use of culture. Most of the population of Cáceres knows this building for its cultural uses through time. Besides being the headquarters since 2004 of the Municipal Library Network of Cáceres and belongs to the Library System of the Autonomous Community of Extremadura since 2006.
The visit the Island Palace can be done by the outside every day of the year and its interior from Monday to Friday.
