Description of the Sorolla Museum in Madrid
The Sorolla Museum is one of the museums that we recommend to visit when you are in Madrid, the museum is the same palace in which he had his house one of the greatest painters that has given Spain, Juaquín Sorolla. This fantastic palace was built by Sorolla himself, participating actively in its design.

Sorolla’s footprint in every detail of his work
Vídeo de Madrid for visitors
The eclectic style of Enrique Repullés made possible that Sorolla could make numerous contributions in the design, adapting it to the whishes and needs of the painter.
In this way, the building reflects the lifestyle, the tastes and professional needs of the artist. The palace has ample spaces with overhead light, fantastic gardens, luxurious areas to receive guests and private areas where he, his wife and three children developed family life.
Joaquin Sorolla’s passion for art is reflected in the numerous objects the artist was collecting and which are exhibited in separate collections of pottery, sculpture and old photography.
The collection of his own work is absolutely wonderful, both in painting and drawing. It is the most complete collection that exists of the artist, with works that have been donated by his family and others that later has been acquiring the Spanish State, owner of the museum. In it we find works of great and small format, dozens of drawings and sketches, the collection and its surroundings is a real delight.
In the Sorolla Museum we can admire wonders like this:
A little about the life of Joaquín Sorolla
He was born in Valencia in 1863, studied fine arts and began painting painting outdoors encouraged by one of his teachers.
In 1884 he won the second medal in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts and also the Provincial Council of Valencia rewarded with a pension to go to Italy. He travels to Rome and Paris where he comes into contact with Naturalism. He returns to Rome and travels through different Italian cities. Here begins hishabits, which will affect his future work.
In another trip he goes to Paris, he knows the Nordic painters, and his way of capturing light, from here its consolidation phase opens, making their own version of luminism, his way of painting goes in the effort to capture the light.
His best works are created in the culmination stage, where light is the dominant interest. Continuing trips to Paris make you enrich and know the different trends. During this time he exhibits individually in different European cities andthe United States where The Hispanic Society of America of New York asks him to make a great decoration on the Provinces of Spain, where the painter faces a gigantic task, that will take him 8 years.
Finally, after his death, at the request of his widow Clotilde García del Castillo, who in 1925 donated all his goods to the Spanish State for the creation of the museum in memory of her husband.
