The Gravina Museum of Fine Arts was opened in 2001 in one of the main buildings of the city of Alicante, the Palace of Count Lumiares being declared Historical Artistic Monument.
This palace is a four storey building built between 1748 and 1808 on the ruins of destroyed buildings during the War of Succession.
The Palacio del Conde Lumiares was the headquarters of Provincial Archives before being the seat of Gravina Museum of Fine Arts. In Order to become a museum its facilities were adapted to new techniques in museology conjugating with the style of the Palace of Gravina.

The Gravina Museum of Fine Arts hosts the collection of art of the Province of Alicante, consisting of more than three thousand works of art ranging from the sixteenth to the twentieth century, although not all of them are exposed as a whole.
Possible to emphasize his permanent exhibition that tries to spread the careers of major artists of the province that they gave fame to the called Valencian school “The Nineteenth Century in the MUBAG. From training to the fullness of an artist “.
In this permanent exhibition the visitor can enjoy the Alicante painting by XIX. Furthermore in this exhibition are also present works from other museums like the Prado, Sorolla or the Fine Arts of Valencia.
The works from the exhibition are arranged chronologically where they show the stages by passing a painter of that period:
- Training with the first moments of the creation of an artist,
- Fullness artistic, moment of greatest splendor creative of the artist
- and the International Recognition .
The collection of the Museum of Fine Arts Gravina also features among its extensive collection of works of art by artists who emphasized from the second half of the nineteenth century, as that the Diputación granted scholarships to local artists to study in Madrid, Rome or Paris.
