The Illeta dels Banyets is one of the oldest archaeological sites excavated in Alicante
Today Illeta dels Banyets is a long and narrow peninsula with a surface of ten thousand square meters, of which approximately four thousand belong to archaeological deposit.

The Illeta dels Banyets was an important trading port in the Mediterranean as evidenced by the amount of remains encountered. Between these remains stand out those of the first period of the Metal Age or Eneolithic. Of the Bronze Age have been found two cisterns surrounded by graves and rooms with numerous remains from this period inside.
Thereafter the settlement was populated by the Iberian people about in the V century BC. In this age remains have been found that indicate increased productive activity, such as processing facilities for agricultural products, fish preservation, well as housing, warehouses, potteries and temples. The settlement was abandoned in the third century BC, being depopulated for three hundred years.
In the first and second centuries A.D. the zone was occupied by the Romans, by constructing a villa on the prehistoric and Iberian remains. Of this period stand out a thermal baths and rafts carved on rock connected to the sea by a trapdoors, forming a fish farm for breeding fish.
The fish farm consists of four rafts (quite eroded by the sea), which are communicated with each other. The biggest receives seawater through two channels at the both ends, the rest are situated perpendicular to the biggest, by communicating between them through vertical slots carved into the rock.
The rafts which served the fish farm received later the name “The bathrooms of the Queen” since according to to legend were the bathrooms of a Moorish queen, because in the XI century the Illeta dels Banyets was occupied by Muslims.
