The Sanctuary of Pla de Petracos was discovered in 1980 by members of the Centre d’Estudis Contestans. This sanctuary is composed of eight cave-coats of which five of them have clearly visible paintings depicting religious and concerns of the inhabitants of this land 8,000 years ago, being considered the Sistine Chapel of Neolithic art.

The Sanctuary of Pla de Petracos was opened in 1998, that year it was declared World Heritage by UNESCO, due to the great historical and artistic importance of the site.
At the time that the paintings were made, Pla de Petracos was a sanctuary, a place of worship and meeting people who had the same beliefs that family ties, agricultural cycles or fecundity and fertility acquired a special relevance. Located in a natural environment, which makes more enjoyable the visit.
The Sanctuary of Pla de Petracos is one of the most important tourist centers of the inland area of the province of Alicante, which are arranged numerous panels in which the paintings are reproduced and suggest their meaning, being a place that allows learn, enjoy and understand the Macroeschemátic art in a magnificent cultural facilities.
The visit to the Sanctuary of Pla de Petracos can be made throughout the year except Monday that the site is closed.
