The Arriaga Theatre is a neo-baroque building from the late nineteenth century. Built by architect Joaquín de Rucoba and dedicated to the figure of composer from Bilbao Juan Crisostomo de Arriaga.The theater arises in response to the theatrical fondness of the inhabitants of the town of Bilbao. Throughout its history the building has undergone several renovations due to the different avatars who has suffered.

The theater is built on the same site where the ‘Teatro de la Villa” and was inaugurated in 1834. This teatre was too small due to the growth of the city and because have been damaged during the Carlist Wars. In 1886 was began to topple the old theater and was started the construction of the new building by architect Joaquín Rucoba, with a capacity of 1,500 seats and commercial premises in its downs.

In 1890 the theater ending works adopting the name of the square where is located, Plaza de Juan Crisostomo de Arriaga, that was a composer of bilbao called the “Spanish Mozart”. After a cost of one million pesetas theater was opened the same year with the opera “La Gioconda” by Amilcare Ponchielli. On the teatre highlights their electric lighting and the ability to follow the musical performances from home through the phone for a price of 15 pesetas per performance.
In 1914 the Teatro Arriaga suffered a fire that destroyed the building, so it was necessary to undertake its reconstruction. The person in charged the project was the architect Federico Ugalde, who gave to the the building of greater amplitude and security.
In 1919 the theater was inaugurated with the opera “Don Carlo” by Giuseppe Verdi. In 1924 the management of the theater passed to the Diestro family, who rents it to the “Joint Stock Company New Theatre of Bilbao”. Its is maintained the management until 1963, which was transferred to the company ” Espectáculos Trueba”
In 1978 the theater property passes to the Town Hall of Bilbao. The poor conditions of the building makes the Town Hall to decide to close to the public. Its reform was initiated in 1980, but in 1983 a terrible flood cause the water level reaches the second floor, causing serious damage to the structure.
The reforms continued until 1986 that was opened the theater. Being managed by a municipal company, basing its main activity in the theatrical performance.
The Arriaga Theatre is a Neo-Baroque Building exempt from trapezoidal plaza, that presents raised with basamental body and padded. The central part of the princial facade has a curve shape with a balcony. In the center of the facade is located a large curved pediment with a clock. Its central roof is twofold, showing lateral domes and turrets. Inside there is a balcony for the authorities with a decoration similar to the Orient Express, as well as two balconies on stage with separate entrance.
The Teatro Arriaga has visits guided by appointment on weekdays in the morning and whenever theater scheduling permits. The schedule of the information office of the theater are Monday through Friday from 11: 00h. 14: 00h in the morning and 17: 00h. 20: 00h. in the afternoon.
