La Alhóndiga of Bilbao is one of the most symbolic buildings in the city. It was inaugurated in 1909 as a wine warehouse, although today is a center of entertainment and culture. In 1905 Ricardo Bastida was commissioned to build the new alhóndiga.

The building was built in the Ensanche zone of Bilbao with a modernist style, creating a great industrial building, functional and very ahead of its time.
La Alhóndiga was integrated as a modern element with vocation to constituting a new city and in 1999 was declared “Cultural Interest” by the Basque Government.
The construction of La Alhóndiga of bilbao was of brick and with the porticoes reinforced concrete being one of the first buildings constructed with this technique in Vizcaya.
In the seventies after industrial activities relocate to more modern buildings, was abandoned waiting for a new activity.

After a long period of inactivity, in 2001, starting the works of renovation were initiated the refurbishment of La Alhondiga in a cultural center under the direction of French architect Philippe Starck.
With the new reform is respects the facade from the original building, getting humanize the building and turn it into a place of reference of the city. The interior of the building with an area of 43,000 square meters, completely renovated creating three cubes brick suspended on 43 columns, numerous cultural and sporting venues.
La Alhóndiga is merged the past and the present, the classicism of its exterior facade contrasts with the urban, original, refreshing and simple interior space created by Philippe Starck in which plasma the life and energy of Bilbao .
The offer of the La Alhóndiga is daily and very diverse due to its wide and varied programming schedule.
In La Alhóndiga the visitors can enjoy exhibitions, concerts, lectures, reading area, children’s workshops, different physical activities, 8 rooms of cinema, shops, restaurants and underground parking. It is open every day of the of the week.
