Leitzaran is a river which rises in the town of Leitza, Navarra, has 42 miles long and ends at the river Oria in the Guipuzcoa, Andoain. The part of the guipuzkoan watershed is known as “Valley of Leitzaran”

The Valley of Leitzaran is Protected Biotope since 1995
Nature is the principal value of the Valley of Leitzaran and the banks of the river Leitzarán along with its tributaries Ubaran and Malo, has been declared Protected Biotope on September 29, 1995.
This valley it was granted Biotopo because of biological diversity of the environment, here we have a list of some of the reasons why it was awarded the title:
- for the quality of its riverside forest with abundant pine, oak, chestnut, beech …
- for the quality of its water, the numerous streams, its main course of a Leitzaran river.
The lack of polluting discharges and activities in your guipuzkuano section, makes it one of the least polluted and better water of GuipuzKoa, so in that is reflected in it are trout, eel, minnow, madrilla …
- because in Botany distinguished by the presence of several rare species of mosses and liverworts in Euskadi.
- by its culturally rich,
- by large extensions of forest, almost 90% of the Valley.
It has always been a sparsely inhabited area with no centers of population except Andoain, in spite of which human activity has left its mark. In this area there are remains prehistoric, remains of herding, although the highlight of the river is the use that was made of it by the Ferreries where iron was obtained.
The waters of the river has moved Flour Mills and small Hydroelectric where some of them are still operational.
Currently recovering a good part the railway track for leisure, Greenway Plazaola. The conditioning of this pathway made by the County Council in 2001, makes it even more convenient to use for walkers and cyclists. This road is crossed today frequently on foot and mountain biking. Horseback rides are also available.
