The Geological Treasure of Gipuzkoa, Route of the Flysch and the Karst
The flysch apart from being a singular landscape, offers information about the biological, the geological and even climate changes that have taken place on the Earth, in the last 60 million years.
The Flysch is visited by geologists from around the world and has been declared a protected biotope by the Basque Government. The area covers a total surface of 4,300 hectares terrestrial and maritime, and this is the fourth biotope of the Basque Country.
We must also mention the spectacular erosion processes that give rise to a line of coast where alternate the excellent examples of cliffs, large landslides, tidal flats and beautiful sandy beaches .
To see the Flysch in all its splendor, we recommend the visit during low tide. We also recommend visiting the Ermita de San Telmo in Zumaia, where part of the movie “Ocho Apellidos Vascos” was filmed, from where the views of the Flysch are breathtaking.
Is worth it to discover the many charms that has this area through the tourist offices of Zumaia, Deba and Mutriku. These offices organize guided tours ranging from a boat trip, trekking along the cliffs, Geotours, museums, kayak tours, whale watching and even horseback riding.

After a trip through the history of the Earth, the visitor can get lost in the green valleys of the interior of the Basque Country, where more recent time seems to have stopped forever.
In the valleys of the interior is located of the world of karst, a mosaic of landscapes caused by the wear of limestone in a remote past, under a tropical sea.
These mountains have been heavily eroded giving rise to an important collection of karstic characteristics. The most notable is a number of caves that were occupied during the Paleolithic and they provide the Geopark an Archaeological Heritage of great interest.
Get into the Karst Route is a journey to a world with a great variety of stunning landscapes, between them highlight the Valley of Lastur (in Deba) or Astigarribia and Olatz (in Mutriku).
