The Natural Park Saja-Besaya, presents in its 24,500 hectares, a characteristic landscape of the hills and mountains of the interior of Cantabria. This park is characterized by numerous valleys are excavated by the tributaries of the rivers Saja and Besaya. Its area comprises the territories of the municipalities of Arenas de Iguña, Cabuérniga, Cieza, Hermandad de Campo de Suso, Ruente and Los Tojos.

In the municipality of Los Tojos we find the only village set in the Natural Park Saja-Besaya, the village of Barcena Mayor.
This town is one of the most amazing and beautiful art-historical urban areas of Cantabria. One of the best examples of ” Traditional Montañesa Architecture ” reflected in the old mountain houses. This town was declared a Historic Artistic Monument in 1979.
This village is considered by many like the oldest town in Cantabria and one of the oldest in Spain. To the town of Barcena a number of people of lands of the interior have arrived taking shelter from the Muslim invasion . Today it still remains alive some traditional crafts in this town like the woodwork. Their houses and stone bridges together with its cobblestone streets take us back in history several centuries ago. To visit this location is necessary to park the vehicle in the parking lot at the entrance of the village.

The Natural Park Saja-Besaya is appropriate for activities such as treking where there are different types of routes along paths as short haul: El Camino Viejo del Moral, the route of the Bridges, the routa of Hayacorva, the route of Barcena Mayor- Alto de Fuentes or Barcena Mayor-Ozcaba. También se pueden realizar rutas por senderos de largo recorrido como el Sendero de la Reserva del Saja.
