The Weather in Jaén
The Jaén Cathedral was built in the same place where was settled the old mosque of the Almohad Jaen and later Gothic cathedral. The Holy Cathedral Church of the Assumption of the Virgin is an authentic jewel of Spanish Renaissance. Its construction lasted several years keeping intact its original idea, though has elements of Gothic, Baroque and neoclassical.

The current Cathedral of Jaen with Renaissance style replaces the previous one Gothic style, which was built up on the major mosque being consecrated in times of Fernando II of Castile. The Gothic cathedral was demolished by the threat of collapse, so became necessary the construction of a new cathedral in the style of the time, which was the Renaissance. In 1540 gives beginning the construction of the new cathedral which lasted until 1724, following the architectural line marked at its beginning by “Vandelvira” the original architect.

The Jaén Cathedral is a Latin cross, where also highlights the Main Facade made between 1667 and 1688 in Baroque style, being one of the major works of Spanish Baroque. Also highlights its twin towers framing the main facade, completed of constructing in the eighteenth century, in Renaissance style. In addition to its Doors as the “Door of Forgiveness,” “Door of the faithful” and the “Gate of the Clergy” and its Portadas the “South” of the sixteenth century and the “North” of the seventeenth century.
Inside the cathedral you can see different styles such as Renaissance, Baroque, Churrigueresque and neoclassical. Highlights include: its Dome of Baroque style, the Main Altar of the late eighteenth century, the Major Chapel built in the sixteenth century, that was replaced by another one of the seventeenth century after being demolished and its Main Altarpiece in neoclassical style. Also stands the relic of the Holy Face, a wood of the Santa Faz (the cloth that Veronica used to wipe the face of Christ, in Calvary Road) in a silver frame encrusted with precious stones.
Likewise also stand out from inside, the smaller Chapels, which are fourteen in the side aisles, plus two in the center beside the Main Chapel, built with predominance of baroque and neoclassical styles.
The Choir that is one of the largest in Spain constructed between 1730 and 1736, the Organs (being the main one from the twentieth century over a box eighteenth century), the contiguous organ is from the eighteenth century and the Trascoro is from late eighteenth century.
Following the interior of the Cathedral of Jaen, protrude the Chapterhouse built in 1556 in Renaissance style, the Sacristy of Renaissance style and built between 1555 and 1560. We also found the Pantheon located below the Chapterhouse and the Sacristy of the XVI century in Renaissance style, in it is located in the Cathedral Museum. The high Galleries situated above the chapels where are the Chapter Library, the Historical Archives Diocesan and numerous works of art.
The visit to the Cathedral of Jaen can be made from Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 14:00 and 17:00 to 20:00 h., Saturday from 10:00 to 14:00 and 17:00 to 19:00 h. and Sundays from 10:00 to 12: 00h.
